Car insurance glossary
What is proof of insurance?
Proof of insurance is a document or approved electronic record showing that a vehicle or driver has an insurance policy in force.
Also called: insurance ID card
Glossary date: May 25, 2026
How it works
An ID card usually lists the insurer, policy number, vehicle, named insured, and policy dates. It summarizes coverage but does not replace the contract.
Example
A driver presents a digital insurance card during a traffic stop where state law accepts electronic proof.
Why it matters
An expired card or incorrect VIN can create problems even when a policy was intended to be active.
What to check on your policy
Keep current proof in the vehicle or approved app and verify the dates, vehicle, and policy number after every renewal.
