Car insurance glossary
What is state minimum coverage?
State minimum coverage is the least auto insurance or financial responsibility protection required by a state for a particular driver or vehicle.
Also called: minimum liability insurance
Glossary date: June 1, 2026
How it works
Requirements can include liability and other coverages, and exceptions may apply. Meeting the minimum does not mean every accident cost will be covered.
Example
A driver buys the required liability limits, then causes damage above the property damage limit. The driver may owe the remaining amount.
Why it matters
Legal compliance and adequate financial protection are different questions.
What to check on your policy
Verify current requirements with the state insurance or motor vehicle agency and consider whether higher limits fit your situation.
