Car insurance glossary

What is car insurance deductible?

A car insurance deductible is the amount you agree to pay toward certain covered claims before the insurer pays its share.

Also called: auto insurance deductible

Glossary date: January 5, 2026

How it works

Deductibles commonly apply to collision and comprehensive claims. They usually do not apply when your liability coverage pays another person for damage or injuries you caused.

Example

Repairs cost $2,400 and your collision deductible is $500. If the claim is covered, the insurer may pay $1,900 and you pay $500.

Why it matters

A higher deductible may reduce the premium, but it leaves you with more to pay after a loss.

What to check on your policy

Review the deductible listed beside each coverage. Make sure you could pay that amount without delaying needed repairs.
