What is claims adjuster?

A claims adjuster investigates an insurance claim and evaluates coverage, damage, fault, and the amount payable.

Also called: insurance adjuster

Glossary date: March 2, 2026

How it works

An adjuster may work for an insurer or independently on its behalf. A public adjuster represents a policyholder, where permitted, and is paid separately.

Example

The adjuster reviews photos, speaks with the drivers, and compares a body shop estimate with the covered damage.

Why it matters

The adjuster needs accurate records to connect the claimed damage with the reported event.

What to check on your policy

Ask what documents are needed, when the review should finish, and how to request a written explanation of a decision.
