Car insurance glossary
What is at-fault accident?
An at-fault accident is a crash in which a driver is found fully or partly responsible under the applicable rules.
Also called: fault accident
Glossary date: February 23, 2026
How it works
Insurers may review police reports, statements, photos, traffic laws, and other evidence. More than one driver can share fault.
Example
A driver follows too closely and hits a stopped car. The evidence may lead the insurers to assign that driver most or all of the fault.
Why it matters
Fault can affect which coverage pays, claim recovery, and future pricing where state law permits.
What to check on your policy
Report facts promptly, keep records, and read any written fault decision. Ask how to challenge an error.
